Frequently asked questions:

  • Acupuncture is generally a gentle and well-tolerated treatment. The needles are very fine — about the width of a hair — and most people feel little to no discomfort when they’re inserted. You might feel a brief sensation like a dull ache, tingling, warmth, or heaviness, which is often a sign that the body is responding. Many people find acupuncture relaxing and even fall asleep during treatment. If you're ever uncomfortable, your practitioner can adjust the needles or technique to ensure you feel safe and supported.

  • Yes, acupuncture is considered safe when performed by a qualified and registered practitioner in New Zealand.

In New Zealand, acupuncture is regulated under the Health Practitioners Competence Assurance Act 2003 (HPCA Act) by the Chinese Medicine Council of New Zealand (CMCNZ). Practitioners must meet rigorous standards of education and competency to be registered. This includes holding a prescribed qualification, being deemed fit for registration, and demonstrating competence in their designated scope of practice.

Members of Acupuncture NZ, the professional body for acupuncturists in New Zealand, are required to:

    • Be registered with the CMCNZ and hold a current Annual Practising Certificate.

    • Adhere to the Acupuncture NZ Code of Professional Ethics and Clinical Procedures and Safe Clinical Practice guidelines.

    • Use sterile, single-use needles and maintain high standards of hygiene.

    • Engage in ongoing professional development, including completing 22 hours of continuing professional development (CPD) education each year.

    • Hold a current first aid certificate

These measures are in place to ensure that acupuncture is practiced safely and effectively. While minor side effects such as slight bruising or soreness at needle sites can occur, serious adverse events are rare when acupuncture is administered by a qualified practitioner.

For more information on the safety and standards of acupuncture practice in New Zealand, you can visit the Chinese Medicine Council of New Zealand at www.chinesemedicinecouncil.org.nz and Acupuncture NZ at www.acupuncture.org.nz.

  • This really depends on the individual and the condition. Generally, we recommend an initial commitment of 3 treatments. A standard course of treatment is 3-12 treatments, with more acute conditions sometimes needing less, and more chronic conditions may require more. Once we make an assessment at your first appointment, we can discuss a treatment plan

  • Once you have an ACC45 claim number from your GP, osteopath or other treatment provider (and claim has been accepted by ACC), ACC will partially cover the cost of acupuncture treatments for 12 weeks for accident related injuries. Becky Moon at Woven Wellness is a recognised ACC Treatment Provider.

  • Often people will feel very relaxed and will have fallen asleep during their treatment, so the feeling can be quite similar to waking from a nap! For others their symptoms may flare for a short period, but most will feel the affects 24-48 hours after treatment.

  • We use single use, stainless steel, sterile disposable needles. They are extremely thin and very different to those used in blood tests.

  • At Woven Wellness - compassion, consent, communication, and safety are the foundation. Our intention is to be with whatever fears may be present for you – and work with you at your own pace. Massage and acupressure can be foundational steps as we build a therapeutic relationship of trust and communication. If and when you are ready to experience acupuncture, our goal is that the needle provides calm, relaxation, openness and relief. Not only are acupuncture needles about the thickness of a human hair, but we go at your pace. Different acupuncturists have different styles, but we find that a gentle and tender approach leads to trust, receptivity, and more lasting effects.
